Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and atrophic vaginitis are common occurrences in women during and after menopause. This is because normal, healthy mucus membranes in the vagina and urinary tract help prevent infections. However, in postmenopausal women, the mucus membranes in the vaginal and urinary tracts become thin and dry, making it more difficult to ward off infections. In addition to drinking plenty of water and unsweetened cranberry juice, certain herbs may help prevent UTIs.

Uristatin consists of several herbs designed to maintain normal urinary tract flora. A study on the effect of uva ursi for preventing UTIs in women found at the end of one year that 5 of 27 in the placebo group and 0 of 30 women who took uva ursi had experienced an infection. Echinacea and goldenseal are added to Uristatin for their additional antimicrobial effects and Buchu has a particular affinity for the urinary tract where it helps soothe inflamed tissues.

Uristatin can be taken at a dose of 1-2 capsules daily for prevention.
Dosage during an acute episode is 2-4 capsules three times daily.
