Nutritional supplements of alpha-lipoic acid are typically comprised either of R-lipoic acid alone or a mixture of R and S forms. Naturally occurring lipoic acid is in the R configuration. Human studies using oral mixtures of lipoic acid have observed blood levels of R-lipoic acid to be greater than blood levels of S-lipoic acid - double in one study - indicating better absorption of the R form.
