Vitamin D deficiency is quite common, particularly among the elderly. A study conducted at a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland, found an almost universal deficiency in vitamin D among a group of 548 elderly patients who were admitted for hip fractures. Likewise, low vitamin D levels have been associated with increased risk for multiple sclerosis, myofascial pain, and certain forms of cancer.
Treatment of colds and influenza with pharmacological doses of vitamin D may only be the tip of the infectious disease iceberg. Vitamin D-sensitive antimicrobial peptides (AMP) have been identified that inhibit the HIV virus. Invasive pneumococcal disease, meningococcal disease, and group
A streptococcal disease (all three sensitive to AMP) are more common when vitamin D levels are lowest in winter, raising the possibility that pharmacological doses of vitamin D would be an effective adjuvant treatment. In fact, the dramatically increased production of AMPs by vitamin D and the broad spectrum of action of AMP make it reasonable to hypothesize that pharmacological doses of vitamin D are effective adjuvants in treating a large number of infections.
Deficient individuals may need 5,000-10,000 IU of vitamin D daily to replenish tissue stores. With these patients specifically in mind, Thorne’s D-5000 supplies 5,000 IU of pure vitamin D3 in each vegetarian capsule.
