Calcium undecylenate (the calcium salt of undecylenic acid) has been shown to have four times the antifungal effect of undecylenic acid and, milligram per milligram, is over 20 times more effective than caprylic acid. Fatty acid salts, however, are more sensitive to pH than free fatty acids, and a pH above 6.0 renders the calcium salt less potent than the free acid. Therefore, calcium undecylenate needs to be delivered to the intestinal tract at an acid pH, without causing unnecessary bicarbonate release or damage to the sensitive intestinal mucosa. Betaine HCl, in a time-release form in Undecyn, is gradually liberated in small quantities throughout the intestinal tract, simultaneously releasing the fatty acid salt.
Undecylenic acid has been shown to be effective in preventing fungal overgrowth associated with vaginal and gastrointestinal candidiasis via its fungicidal activity. Since undecylenic acid acts systemically, oral administration can inhibit or even prevent oral candidiasis, or thrush.
Undecyn combines the antifungal qualities of undecylenic acid with grapefruit seed extract (a proven antimicrobial agent), betaine HCl, and the endotoxin-binding activity of bentonite clay.
