| Description | Saccharomyces boulardii is a beneficial, non-pathogenic yeast species that can help prevent the overgrowth of pathogenic species, especially during antibiotic treatment. In clinical studies, Saccharomyces boulardii prevented antibiotic-associated diarrhea and increased production of secretory IgA, the first-line defense immunoglobin of the gastrointestinal tract. This beneficial yeast may also be effective for HIV-associated diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, and diarrhea of unknown origin. Oral administration of Saccharomyces boulardii has been shown in animal studies to inhibit the translocation of Candida albicans from the gastrointestinal tract. Administration reduced the incidence of Candida-postive lymph node cultures. |
