| Description | Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) has been used in traditional phytotherapy for thousands of years. It is described as having spasmolytic (muscle relaxing), anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving effects. Petadolex supplementation results in inhibition of lipoxygenase activity and a subsequent down-regulation of leukotriene synthesis. This results in anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects with reduced pulmonary inflammation and maintenance of bronchial smooth muscle tone in asthma and bronchitis patients. Selective inhibition of the COX-2 isoenzyme results in reduction of inflammatory prostaglandin levels. Clinical studies show increased respiratory function in asthmatics and concomitant reduction in the use of pharmaceutical medications with Petadolex. Petadolex has also been used successfully for allergic rhinitis, which is usually also found in asthmatics. A 2004 study showed that 8 mg three times daily for seven days reduced allergy symptomatology more than Allegra (fexofenadine). Similar significant improvement over Allegra was found in a large Swiss study in 2005. Six studies involving over 650 patients have demonstrated butterbur’s effectiveness in relieving allergic rhinitis symptoms, compared to placebo, fexofenadine, and ceterizine (Zyrtec). Butterbur’s greatest utility may in the prevention and treatment of migraines. Studies on the standardized extract in Petadolex demonstrate significantly fewer migraines in patients who supplement with butterbur; up to a 60-percent decrease was seen in two studies involving 128 patients. Even those with breakthrough migraines experienced less duration and intensity of pain. The adult dosage for Petadolex is one capsule twice daily with meals. If supplementing acutely for an impending migraine, 2-3 capsules twice daily can be taken. Petadolex can be used long-term, since potentially toxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the plant are removed in the extraction process. |
