lysine, some notable applications include synthesis of connective tissues such as bone, skin, collagen, and elastin; synthesis of carnitine and the resultant conversion of fatty acids to energy; support for healthy growth and development in children; and maintenance of healthy immune function, particularly with regard to antiviral activity.
L-lysine has been most extensively researched for prevention or management of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Some individuals with Herpes simplex infection appear to be sensitive to the lysine/arginine ratio in their tissues, with a decrease in this ratio resulting in skin eruptions.
L-lysine appears to be beneficial in suppressing Herpes simplex replication by competing with arginine for absorption in the intestines, reabsorption in the renal tubules, and transport into cells. In addition, lysine helps breakdown arginine by inducing the enzyme arginase.

I have been getting cold sores occasionally since I was a kid, and have tried almost every topical product out there. The problem with that is it was doing nothing to prevent the cold sores. Ever since I have been taking Thorne's L-Lysine (I usually take 1 every day in the morning) I have not gotten a cold sore in almost two years!!
