Quick Overview

    Product Description

Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a compound found in high concentrations in vegetables of the Brassica family, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage.

As a dietary supplement, I3C provides key nutritional support for prevention and management of breast and other types of cancers, and may also be beneficial in the management of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human papilloma virus (HPV). The majority of ingested I3C is absorbed in the small intestine as the dimer, diindolylmethane (DIM), which is thought to be the primary contributor to I3C’s beneficial properties. DIM has been shown to selectively bind to estrogen receptors, and may act as an estrogen antagonist at physiological concentration.

I3C up-regulates phase I and II detoxification enzymes and increases the ratio of 2-hydroxy/16-hydroxy estrogens. The 2-hydroxy estrogens, less active than the 16- hydroxy estrogens, are more rapidly eliminated from the body. A high urinary level of 16-hydroxyestrone has been associated with increased risk for breast and other hormone-related cancers. Studies have shown urinary 2:16-hydroxyestrone ratios to be significantly lower in breast cancer cases compared to controls in both pre- and postmenopausal women. Another prospective study found postmenopausal women in the highest tertile of urinary 2:16-hydroxyestrone ratio were 30-percent less likely to develop breast cancer over follow-up periods of up to 19 years.

Preliminary studies have examined its efficacy, safety, and optimal dosage. A 12-week phase I trial conducted on 17 women from a high-risk breast cancer cohort found a 66-percent rise in the urinary 2:16-hydroxyestrone ratio with administration of 400 mg indole-3-carbinol (I3C) daily. I3C and tamoxifen have been shown to act separately and/or cooperatively to inhibit the growth of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer cells. I3C has also been shown in vitro to inhibit the ability of human breast cancer cells to invade surrounding tissue. These studies have been promising, and will likely be followed by larger clinical trials.
