Quick Overview

    Product Description

Reduced glutathione (GSH) occurs naturally in all human cells. Its intracellular depletion ultimately results in cell death; thus, it has extensive clinical relevance. GSH is a cofactor for dozens of enzymes involved in detoxification. In addition, it directly quenches several reactive oxygen species. The aging process is associated with deterioration of glutathione homeostasis. Numerous conditions are characterized by a glutathione deficiency, including liver disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, HIV infection, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cataracts, and Parkinson’s disease. Although a commonly held belief is that glutathione is not absorbed from an oral dose, copious data confirm it is efficiently absorbed across the intestinal epithelium by a specific uptake system.

The liver is the largest reservoir for glutathione in the body. Glutathione, a potent endogenous antioxidant, is absolutely essential for phase I and II liver detoxification. Glutathione levels have been found to be low in acute or chronic alcohol consumption, cirrhosis, non-alcoholic liver disease, and hepatitis. In addition acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and environmental xenobiotics can deplete the liver’s supply of glutathione.

Optimal levels of glutathione appear to be very important for cognitive function, especially as we age. The process of aging is associated with a decrease in glutathione homeostasis, resulting in increased oxidative activity and decreased levels of reduced glutathione. This appears to be especially prominent in individuals experiencing a decline in cognitive function. Conversely, those living over 100 years tend to have higher glutathione reductase activity. A variety of neurodegenerative conditions manifest abnormally low glutathione levels.

Glutathione-SR from Thorne Research represents a breakthrough in glutathione supplementation. Absorption of oral glutathione may be affected by stomach acid or enzymes in the duodenum, which can break glutathione into its amino acid components. However, the sustained-release properties of Glutathione-SR protect it from stomach acid and digestive enzymes, allowing slower release and a more steady blood level of this essential nutrient.
