Gymnema sylvestre, a plant native to India, has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years. Its effect on regulating blood glucose has been widely studied since the 1930s. It has been found to normalize blood sugar in human studies. In animal studies it has been found to increase the number of beta cells in the pancreas. It also maintains normal cholesterol and triglyceride levels, often found to be elevated in individuals with hyperglycemia.
Momordia charantia (bitter melon) is an herb commonly found in China, India, and Africa. Its active ingredients include charantin and a substance known as p-insulin (plant insulin), which resembles bovine insulin in structure and function. These components appear to both enhance glucose
utilization and depress glucose synthesis in the liver.
Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) contains important anthocyanoside flavonoids that appear to have a particular affinity for ocular tissue, particularly the retina. These flavonoids decrease capillary permeability and help stabilize collagen, decreasing abnormal collagen formation in sensitive tissues.
Quercetin chalcone, in addition to its collagen-stabilizing effects, inhibits aldose reductase, the enzyme that converts glucose and galactose to sorbitol and other polyols. Once formed, polyols accumulate in cells such as the lens of the eye, renal glomeruli, and peripheral nerves.
Lipoic acid is a potent antioxidant in both water- and fat-soluble mediums, and it significantly reduces lipid peroxidation of nerve tissue. It has also been found to inhibit aldose reductase and the oxidation of glycated proteins, such as glycosylated hemoglobin.
UltraChrome and vanadyl sulfate are also included in Diabenil. Because of the synergistic effects of these nutrients with botanicals in the formula, and in order to provide a supplement also suited for children, the dosages of chromium and vanadyl sulfate in Diabenil are lower than those used in studies in which the minerals were used as stand-alone products.
