Melatonin Supplements

One particular current health trend that has become widely popular is the use of supplements. Everything from Omega-3 Oil to Whey Protein Powder to Cognitive Stimulants, supplements have seen a serious spike in sales. Even though most supplements are beneficial, they are not all necessary. There is one, however, that is very necessary for certain people. The funny thing is though, that the person may not even realize how necessary it is until they start using it. This unique supplement is called Melatonin.

How Does Melatonin Work?

Melatonin is a hormone that is naturally found in the human body. It is produced in the pineal gland in the brain and is created by an amino acid called tryptophan. The pineal gland works in conjunction with a set of nerves called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN. Together, combined with the external forces of light and darkness, they relay off each other to produce Melatonin in your body. For example, in the morning as the sun is coming up and the light increases the SCN signals to the pineal gland that it needs to start decreasing its Melatonin production so the body can wake up and become alert. The exact opposite happens as the sun starts going down and the darkness starts taking over. The SCN once again signals to the pineal glad that this change is occurring and it immediately starts the Melatonin production. It’s Melatonin that regulates the sleep cycles and allows you to fall asleep and stay asleep. It has other uses as well, but this is its primary function.

Why Is Melatonin Important?

Now you may be wondering, if the body already produces Melatonin, then what is the purpose of having a supplement? Well, just like with anything else a deficiency can occur. If this deficiency occurs, it makes sleep difficult and can cause restlessness and anxiety. In order for you to come back into balance and regulate your sleep cycles, a Melatonin supplement is necessary. Plus, these supplements have been used in a variety of other ways. For example, they have been used to help treat anxiety and depression. They have also been given to patients with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. As well as are used for both helping with cancer treatment side effects and helping to treat certain cancers. There are numerous uses for a Melatonin supplement and thankfully they are easily to come by.

Different Forms of Melatonin Supplements

Many different trusted vitamin companies have their own synthetic Melatonin supplement. These supplements can come in a few different forms. The first is in pill form. This is normally a gel capsule that you take about 30 minutes or so before going to bed. It is taken orally and typically comes in 3 to 5 milligram capsules. Another form is a disintegrating tablet. This tablet is unique because it can be placed under the tongue or on the cheek and it allows the Melatonin to be absorbed directly into your body.

Is Synthetic Melatonin Safer?

There is also another version of man-made Melatonin referred to as a natural supplement. However, don’t let this natural fool you. It is actually one that is not recommended due to the fact that is made from cow pineal glands and has the risk of carrying bacteria and other viruses. The synthetic form mentioned above does not have this risk and it is considered the safer supplement of the two.
