Melatonin was discovered in 1958 by dermatology professor Aaron B. Lerner. It is a hormone that is naturally created in the body to help regulate the sleeping cycle. It is an important hormone because its primary function is to help the body relax so it can move into a REM sleep cycle. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Melatonin deficiencies, which can cause the individual to become restless and unable to fall or stay asleep. This can lead to other problems such as anxiety, depression, high levels of stress, and other health issues. Thankfully, there is the supplement that has started to become prevalent in almost every grocery store, pharmacy, and health foods store. There a few different forms of the Melatonin supplement, such as tablets and pills, but this article will focus on the pill form.
What is Melatonin?
In order to understand the importance of the supplement or why it is effective, it would be helpful to have an understanding of what exactly Melatonin is, and how it is produced naturally in the body. As said earlier, Melatonin is a hormone and it is produced in the brain, specifically the pineal gland. The substance that actually creates Melatonin is an amino acid called tryptophan. The process of how it is produced is a little complex as it uses several different synapses in the brain. For example, the pineal gland works with another set of nerves in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN. It’s the SCN that actually signals the pineal gland and tells it whether the body is in a light or dark surrounding. For instance, if it is dark, the SCN tell that to the pineal gland, and the pineal gland then starts producing Melatonin. The opposite occurs when it is light.
How Does a Melatonin Supplement Help?
When a Melatonin deficiency occurs, a supplement can easily be subsisted to help bring the body back into balance. As said before Melatonin comes in two different ways, one of which is in pill form. The pill is normally either a gel filled capsule or a white round powdery pill. Both come in 3 to 5 milligram dosages and are both safe and effective.
Types of Melatonin Pills
Typically, pills are taken about 30 minutes to an hour before bed, and depending on the brand will be taken in amounts of 1 to about 3 pills. There are a few unique types of pills. One is a time-release capsule. This one is different because it puts the individual to sleep quickly, but then it has a slow releasing formula, which helps keep them asleep all night long. Other types of pills are ones like chewables, fast dissolve, triple strength, and easy to swallow.
Benefit of a Melatonin Supplement Pill
Regardless of the type of pill you decide to take, they can all be effective in helping get you back on track with a sleeping schedule. Sometimes it’s hard, especially if you have a sleep disorder, to fall asleep and stay asleep. The stress and anxiety that comes with everyday life sometimes will take its toll and make it difficult to be able to relax. Thankfully, Melatonin pills will give you what you need to help keep you sleeping like a baby all night long.
