Melatonin Dosage

You probably have heard the saying “You can never have too much of a good thing.” While this can be true in many cases, there are certain areas where this is not applicable. One of those particular areas is a place called the “Supplement World”. The “Supplement World” is just what it sounds like, the world of supplements. If you are into health and fitness you may be very familiar with different types of supplements and the benefits they provide. But if you aren’t, supplements are what many people use when they either lack a deficiency or they are wanting more of a particular vitamin, mineral, element, etc.

While supplements can be a very good thing, something that needs to be considered when taking is the dosage. Sometimes, we can get so caught up in what it will do for us, we forget that if not taken properly it may sometimes cause more harm than good. Thankfully, that’s not the case in most supplements, but it is still something to be kept in mind, especially with a supplement such as Melatonin.

What is Melatonin?

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced naturally in the body. It is responsible for regulating your day and night cycles or your sleep and wake cycles. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland in the brain and works in conjunction with both the suprachiasmatic nucleus, or SCN, and the external elements of light and darkness. For instance, when the sun is going down and the light begins to disappear the SCN sends a message to the pineal gland that it needs to start creating Melatonin so the body can relax and prepare for rest. The reverse then happens as light comes back in the morning and Melatonin production is suppressed. It is Melatonin that causes you to sleep, and without it you will become restless, anxious, and have difficulty falling and staying asleep.

What is a Safe Dose of Melatonin?

It is for those reasons why a Melatonin supplement may be necessary. And as long as it is used correctly it can provide tremendous benefits. However, there are some arguments among scientists as to what the proper dosage amount equals. For example, most Melatonin supplements will provide you with a 3 to 5 milligram pill or tablet. Certain scientists argue that you really only need a 0.1 to a 0.5 milligram dosage amount, and anything else too excessive. Despite the controversy, 3 to 5 milligrams is still considered a safe dosage.

When Should You Take Melatonin?

When taking a supplement you also need to look at when and how you take it. For instance, Melatonin is a supplement that should only be taken right before you are ready to fall asleep. Since it is a sleep aid it should not be taken within 4 hours of operating machinery or driving. It is safe to be taken in proper small dosages for either a short or long period of time and it should always be taken orally by either a tablet or pill. Just make sure you take the proper amount according to the brand you have purchased and you are not taking more is stated on the bottle. While Melatonin is a natural and virtually risk free supplement, it still does carry the risk of certain side effects. Melatonin is a tremendously effective supplement. And if taken correctly can help with a variety of issues besides just sleep enhancement. It is natural and safe and can help bring both your body and mind into balance. Helping give you a peace of mind and restful night’s sleep.
