Iodine

What is Potassium Iodide?

Potassium iodide (abbreviated KI) is a salt of stable iodine, which means it is not radioactive. Generally, potassium iodide is medicinally supplied in 130mg tablets for emergency purposes such as the recent tragedies in Japan. It is also used by those whose thyroid glands are not functioning properly.

What is Potassium Iodide Used For?

Potassium iodide and other iodine supplements are used as a nutritional supplement in animal feeds and is also included in day-to-day human diets. Humans generally get potassium iodide naturally from fish (that eat sea vegetables, such as kelp) and other natural food sources. Potassium iodide is the most common additive to iodize table salt so it doesn’t oxidize as easy.

Potassium iodide can be used to protect thyroid glands from absorbing radioactive particles leaking from damaged nuclear reactors and inhaled into the lungs. Dangerous fission may be released during such leaks and is particularly dangerous to the thyroid gland because it may lead to thyroid cancer; the thyroid gland absorbs iodide but cannot tell the difference between radioactive iodide and non-radioactive iodide. Therefore, during such leaks, it is important that your body get more potassium iodide than necessary in an effort to absorb only non-radioactive iodide (thyroid blocking).

Note: If you have not consulted a doctor before ingesting potassium iodide, do so; there are serious health risks involved if not administered properly.
