Hi-Vidomin Nutritional Immune Support formula provided by Douglas Laboratories®, contains a synergistic blend of coenzyme Q10, acetyl L-Carnitine and ginkgo biloba, designed to provide antioxidant and immune support. This formula can be used as an adjunct to the Hi-Vidomin Immune Multi formula or on its own as a powerful immune supportive product.
FUNCTIONS
Currently, there is great interest in maintaining optimal immune health as avian populations continue their migratory patterns. The ingredients in this product are designed to provide support to the immune and antioxidant systems. Studies indicate that during the times of certain immune challenges, the overproduction of free radicals can have toxic effects to cells.
Free radicals, once formed, are capable of disrupting metabolic activity and cell structure.
When this occurs, additional free radicals are produced which, in turn, can result in more extensive damage to cells and tissues. If inadequate amounts of antioxidants are consumed, these free radicals can proliferate and cause further damage to a challenged immune system. Sub-optimal immune status can especially cause high levels of free radicals such as pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-alpha and interferon beta to be secreted, causing a further cycle of oxidative stress, antioxidant depletion and cytokine secretion.
Coenzyme Q10 (or ubiquinone) is an important rate-limiting nutrient that is a cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the biochemical pathway in cellular respiration from which adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and metabolic energy is derived. Since nearly all cellular activities are dependent upon energy, coenzyme Q10 is essential for the health of all human tissues and organs.
Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally-occurring antioxidant nutrient which retards free radical formation in biological systems. Acetyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring metabolite of L-carnitine, and both are present in the diet, particularly in foods of animal origin. In most tissues of the body, both L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine are involved in fatty acid oxidation. They are part of the so-called carnitine shuttle. L-carnitine shuttles fatty acids from the cytosol (the cell fluid) into the mitochondria (the cell’s powerhouses) for oxidation and energy production. The main end products of fatty acid oxidation are energy (in the form of NADH), and acetyl groups. Most of these acetyl groups are further oxidized in the mitochondria’s Krebs cycle, but some are needed in the cytosol for producing other important metabolites.
Acetyl-L-carnitine provides a way to carry these acetyl groups through the mitochondrial membranes back out into the cytosol. During certain immune challenges, proper mitochondrial functioning is crucial to supporting the body and central nervous system. Ginkgo biloba is the oldest living species of tree, having survived relatively unchanged for at least 200 million years. Native to China, ginkgo has long been recommended in Chinese herbal medicine for its numerous nutritional benefits Ginkgo leaf extract has been the object of numerous scientific and clinical studies since the early 1970’s, and ahs shown to be useful for supporting normal cytokine production.
