FUNCTIONS
Body cells and tissues are threatened continuously by damage caused by toxic free radicals and reactive oxygen species (e.g., peroxides) which are produced during normal oxygen metabolism, by other chemical reactions, and by toxic agents in the environment. Free radicals, once formed, are capable of disrupting metabolic activity and cell structure. When this occurs, additional free radicals are produced which, in turn, can result in more extensive damage to cells and tissues. The uncontrolled production of free radicals is thought to be a major contributing factor to many degenerative diseases. The body’s antioxidant defense system is more than the sum of its parts. That’s because antioxidants depend on each other for ongoing effectiveness. For example, coenzyme Q10 and beta-carotene support vitamin E; vitamin E is regenerated by vitamin C; glutathione reactivates vitamin C; selenium and B-vitamins are needed to keep glutathione effective, and zinc, copper and manganese are needed to keep the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase active.

Basic Antiox™ is formulated to supply significant amounts of the key antioxidants participating in the body’s synergistic antioxidant defense system. Basic Preventive® 5 is a comprehensive, highly concentrated vitamin-mineral-trace element supplement containing more than 30 essential nutrients and cofactors. Basic Preventive 5 essentially combines four formulas in one: a potent antioxidant formula rich in natural beta-carotene (from D. salina), vitamin C and natural vitamin E; a high-potency B-complex supplement; a significant source of bioavailable calcium and magnesium; and a full-spectrum trace element supplement, providing zinc, copper, chromium and selenium. Basic Preventive 5 is iron-free. Vitamin E is recognized as the body’s most valuable fat-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E prevents oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids by trapping free radicals. This helps stabilize and protect cell membranes, especially red blood cells and tissues sensitive to oxidation, such as lungs, eyes, and the arteries. Vitamin E has synergistic effects with co-enzyme Q10, vitamin C, glutathione, and other anti-oxidants. Basic Antiox supplies a total of 1,200 I.U. natural vitamin E per day. Co-Enzyme Q10 (or ubiquinone) is an important cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the biochemical pathway in cellular respiration from which adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and metabolic energy is derived.

Co-enzyme Q10 is a naturallyoccurring antioxidant nutrient which inhibits free radical formation in biological systems. Co-enzyme Q10 resembles vitamin E and vitamin K in chemical structure. Biochemically, it functions much like vitamin E in that it participates in antioxidant and free radical reactions. Vitamin C is a potent water-soluble antioxidant nutrient, protecting cells from oxygen free radical damage. It is essential for connective tissue and bone metabolism, capillary health, and immune function. Vitamin C works together with vitamin E. When vitamin E is inactivated by neutralizing free radicals, vitamin C regenerates it back to full activity. In this process, however, vitamin C is oxidized. Basic Antiox provides 3,200 mg vitamin C per day. Glutathione (from Glutathione Plus™) is a naturally occurring tripeptide which is a major component of two anti-free radical enzymes - glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. As such, glutathione offers one mechanism for scavenging toxic free radicals and inhibiting peroxidation thereby slowing down free radical catalyzed chain reactions. Glutathione can also Douglas Product Data
Laboratories® reactivate (reduce) oxidized vitamin C.

Glutathione per se is well absorbed in the intestine, and enters the blood and other extracellular compartments where it exerts much of its beneficial antioxidant effects. However, it can not effectively enter the cell. N-Acetylcysteine (from Glutathione Plus™) is a precursor for the sulfur amino acid cysteine which is used by the cells to synthesize glutathione. In contrast to glutathione, N-acetylcysteine is efficiently transported into the cell where it is readily converted to cysteine for glutathione synthesis. Thus, supplementation with Nacetylcysteine is recognized as a safe, highly effective method of increasing intracellular glutathione stores. Aside from providing cysteine as a glutathione precursor, N-acetylcysteine also appears to have antioxidant properties as such, and is a valuable sulfur donor for various metabolic needs. Taurine is an abundant free amino acid in the body that provides protection to biological membranes against lipid peroxidation. This protects cells from abnormal calcium ion or water entry which can occur as a result of lipid peroxidation. Taurine lends its protective ability to oxidant-sensitive tissues, such as the retina, where it helps protect visual cells from light-induced oxidative damage. The cell stabilizing effect of taurine is also important in the central nervous system, skeletal muscle, and heart, where it is found in the highest concentrations.
