FUNCTIONS
Lycopene, lutein, alpha-, and beta-carotene, glutathione, as well as bioflavonoids, such as quercetin, are important antioxidant nutrients that protect healthy cells from oxidative and free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable chemicals formed in the body during metabolism and from exposure to environmental sources, such as pollution and cigarette smoke. They can attack and damage healthy cells, especially their membrane lipids and proteins. This, in turn, is thought to contribute to a number of degenerative health problems. Maitake, Shitake and Reishi mushrooms have important immune and cardiovascular benefits. The Reishi mushroom can act as an immunostimulant by activating macrophages and polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Green tea contains a variety of phytochemicals including polyphenols, methylxanthines, flavonoids, and triterpenoid saponins.

The tea polyphenols, catechin, epi-catechin, epi-gallocatechin (EGC), and most notably EGC gallate act as antioxidants and support immune function and cardiovascular health. In vitro, these nutrients have been shown to inhibit cell growth and induce apoptosis. Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) may help down regulate the formation of excessive levels of proinflammatory 2-series prostaglandins and other immune mediators. Cartilage powder contains chondroitin and glucosamine, a naturally occurring amino sugar found in glycosoaminoglycans, integral components of the proteoglycans found in joint cartilage. Proteoglycans are large carbohydrate rich structures that provide resiliency, load distribution, shockabsorbing, compressive and lubricating properties to joints and connective tissues. The availability of glucosamine is an integral part of the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans that are necessary during the constant remodeling that aging cartilage undergoes. Thus, the maintenance of healthy aging cartilage may be improved with enhanced deposition of glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and kale, offer protective sulforophane compounds known for their ability to induce phase 2 detoxifying enzymes.
