Quick Overview

    Product Description

DHEA is a natural steroid hormone that is synthesized from cholesterol through pregnenelone by the adrenal glands.

DHEA acts as an antagonist for glucocorticosteroid hormones and is the parent precursor for other important steroid hormones, such as estradiol and other estrogens, and testosterone. While not a precursor to progesterone, DHEA can indirectly influence progesterone synthesis through a feedback mechanism whereby pregnenelone is converted to progesterone based on DHEA levels. Apart from these functions, DHEA also has important biological functions itself.

Recent experimental and human studies show that DHEA is involved in a large variety of physiological processes, including immune function, brain function, bone metabolism, blood lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, the regulation of normal blood sugar and insulin levels, and the maintenance of lean body mass. DHEA and its metabolite DHEA sulfate are present in human adult plasma in concentrations of 0.01-0.02 ¬M and 5 to 7 ¬M, respectively.

DHEA sulfate levels are low in early childhood; begin to rise after age 7, peak at age 20-24, and then drop at a rate of approximately 20% per decade, until at age 85-90, levels are 10-15% of what they used to be at age 20- 30. DHEA levels also decline under a variety of conditions of physiological stress, such as acute and chronic infections, and trauma. Vegetarians have been shown to have decreased DHEA levels as well.

The sublingual DHEA is effective and I prefer it over capsules because it does not require me to have a drink on hand to swallow a pill. This makes it easy to take first thing in the morning, even if I'm in a rush.

    • effective product to increase DHEA

Posted by Ed on August 2, 2011
I had long-term hypothyroidism which triggered adrenal insufficiency. I have used the Douglas Labs sublingual 5mg and 25mg tablets to restore my DHEA level. On 25mg taken once in the morning, my peak DHEA-S for the day (one hour after dose) is about 467 mcg/dl (desired level 280-640 to restore to a 20-something male level). I have found after a couple of double-test cycles that the half-life of DHEA-S is between 2 and 4 days, so dosing with this product more than once a day is not necessary. I just dose once in the morning and by late afternoon (8 hours later), my DHEA-S level has fallen by <10%.

Only caveat: do NOT order this product during hot summer months with cheap (USPS) shipping. USPS shoved my order in my mailbox in full sun, which cooked it.

I have used this product in the past and had great results from it, probably would give it 5 stars. It always dissolved quickly under my tongue and did a lot to increase my energy levels. However, the last two bottles I recieved of this (both with the same batch number) do not dissolve easily. I have to keep it under my tongue for at least ten minutes before it dissolves(I end up chewing the last bit just to get it over with), and it doesn't seem to be as effective in raising my energy level. I am wondering if the company has changed it's formulation or if this is just a bad batch. I will wait a while before I try it again, and hopefully the next bottle will be better.
