When I was a child my health-crazed Mom would prescribe vitamin E for everything. Dry, chapped hands? Put some vitamin E on â€˜em. Canker sore? Dab on some vitamin E. My mom regularly kept soft gel tablets of vitamin E on hand and would break them open whenever we needed the stuff. We also swallowed them as part of our regular vitamin supplements.
Lately, as Iâ€™ve been building my own grown-up knowledge of vitamins and supplements, Iâ€™ve wondered about vitamin Eâ€™s actual potency. I mean, really, what is this stuff? My mother was often a little extreme in her health-nut ways. Are there any grounds to her obsession with vitamin E?
My findings confirmed what my gut has told me for the past several years: About some things, my mother was actually right!
- Vitamin E really is the fountain of youth. Vitamin E features a chemical compound (known as alpha-tocopherol) that prevents cell membranes from oxidizing. This causes body tissues to last longer and to have a more healthful appearance. And it doesnâ€™t matter whether you inject vitamin E into your system, rub it onto the surface of the skin, or take a pill by mouth. It still works its anti-aging magic.

- Most adults should consume at least 15 mg of vitamin E daily.
