It’s okay if you’re no Bobby Flay or Rachael Ray. Cooking edible and delicious foods may seem like a talent, but really it’s just a learned skill. And with newly available nutritional info for restaurants and fast-food joints it’s becoming more and more apparent that home-cooked food is a heck of a lot healthier than eating out.

Especially if the home cooked food is organic. Now if you were okay with the whole cooking idea, but the notion of trying to go organic revives your feelings of terror then just take a deep breath. Organic cooking might sound extra challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. You’re not alone if one of the following questions is bugging you...

Why cook organic?

  • Non-organic foods are grown or raised with pesticides, herbicides, contaminated sewage, and/or synthetic hormones and antibiotics. All of these man-made chemicals don’t magically disappear when the crop is harvested or the cow is butchered. Instead, they end up in you.
  • Cooking non-organic foods doesn’t eliminate the chemicals. They still end up inside you and can affect your development, overall health, and well-being.
  • Organic foods are just as easy to prepare as non-organic foods. Those who eat organic foods regularly report higher energy levels. Plus, organic foods often taste better.
  • Going organic is good for the environment. Organic farmers treat animals humanely and are careful not to strip the soil of essential nutrients (making organic foods much more nutritious).

How do I cook organic? (Hint: This part is easy.)

  • Do your research. There are dozens of cookbooks, cooking shows, and video blogs that convey step-by-step recipes that utilize organic foods.
  • Check your local supermarket. These days it’s possible to buy an organic counterpart to almost every food item.
  • Visit your local farmer’s market to get insanely fresh in-season produce. Ask the farmers if they have any tips for using a specific fruit or vegetable in a recipe.
  • Stock up on some quick-fix basics. Stash the freezer with frozen bags of organic produce. Make sure your pantry has organic pastas, canned tomatoes, and beans. Keep organic beef, chicken, or vegetable stock on hand. Next time you’re in a pinch and feel like ordering takeout or grabbing a burger you’ll be prepared.
