Health Benefits of Oranges

Oranges are part of the citrus family as are lemons and limes. Oranges are also one of the world’s most common favorite fruits, enjoyed all around the world. This orange citrus delight is a fragrant fruit that is both refreshing and fulfilling.


Improves Cardiovascular Health

The health benefits of oranges when it comes to cardiovascular health are quite impressive. The World Health Organization’s released a draft report, “Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease,” which found that a diet which consist of citrus fruits such as oranges helps prevent the risk of cardiovascular disease due to the following nutritients:

Folate: Folate is essential to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease
Potassium: Potassium reduces blood pressure which offers protection against stroke and cardiac arrhythmias.
Other Cardiovascular Promoting Nutrients:  Vitamin C, carotenoids and flavonoids.


Anti-Cancer Properties

Do the health benefits of orange include anti cancer properties? How so? For one, it is rich in Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant which helps eradicate free radicals found in the body and oxidative stress, both of which are the leading causes of cell damage and hence cancer. Oranges also contain a particular anti-cancer compound called D-Limonene which has been scientifically proven to be able to help prevent certain cancers which include; Skin Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Colon Cancer, Breast Cancer and Lung Cancer.

Helps Prevent Kidney Stones

A study which featured in the British Journal of Nutrition realized that women who daily consumed an estimate of 1/2 to 1 litre of orange, grapefruit or apple experienced a higher citric acid concentration in their urine which helped reduce their risk of oxalate calcium stones.  This health benefit of oranges may come as a surprise to some. If you have a known tendency towards developing kidney stones, consult your health practitioner about the consumption or orange juice.

High Fiber

Just one orange provides 12.5% of the daily requirement for fiber! This fiber is believed to be able to offer protection against colon cancer. Additionally, the fiber helps relieve digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

Anti-Lung Cancer Properties

Yes oranges do have anti cancer properties. However, research suggests that this connection is even truer when it comes to lung cancer. Oranges contain an orange carotenoid known as beta-cryptoxanthin which has the ability to lower an individual’s lung cancer risk. A study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention using data of more than 60,000 adults in Shangai, China found that those individuals who ate foods rich in crytpoxanthin enjoyed a 27% lower risk of contracting lung cancer.

Promotes Weight Loss

This health benefit of oranges is due to its remarkably low calorie count, a single orange consisting about only 65 calories. Hence, you can eat as many oranges you like without having to worry about weight, plus it has a rich count of Fiber, as a result keeps your hunger sustained for longer, reducing the desires to splurge on other foods.

Good for Your Bones and Teeth

Oranges are a source of calcium and vitamin c, both of which have been proven to be extremely healthy for strengthening bones and teeth. Having oranges has therefore proved to help prevent the risks of early tooth decay and Osteoporosis.

Healthy Skin

The benefits oranges have on the skin cannot be stressed enough. Due to its rich content of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, oranges can help prevent the damaging of skin due and signs of premature aging due to Free Radicals. Famous for posessesing a high concentrate of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) orange makes for a very valuable and treasured fruit.
