Proper Neuronal Support Is Crucial to Stable Mood & Cognition

According to the National Institutes of Health, 4 to 5 million Americans and Canadians live with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzhemer’s Disease (AD), while close to 50 million people experience depression. Furthermore, addictions and insomnia are
observed in 20 and 30 million individuals, respectively, in the U.S. and Canada. Since neuronal communication is normally fine-tuned, any deviation in the production, absorption, or reabsorption of
neurochemicals may lead to chemical imbalance that can cause dramatic shifts in physical, cognitive, and mood behaviors. While the exact mechanism of how certain natural ingredients may directly or indirectly influence particular neuronal activities is yet to be
determined, a number of herbal compounds have emerged as promising candidates for neuronal support. One nutritional approach to neurological health may be to focus on 2 critical steps—to restore connection and to restore balance in the brain. More specifically, formulations designed to act centrally—i.e., incorporating ingredients with potential to cross the blood-brain barrier—should further aid in
providing neurological support.

Overall Strategy that Invigorates Brain Health

Restore Connection:

* Improve neuronal communication
* Support neuronal integrity
* Manage substances that interfere with message development and delivery

Restore balance:

* Maintain a healthy relationship between excitatory and inhibitory messages—i.e., neurochemicals such as acetylcholine, gamma-
aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate, dopamine, norepinephrine, serotonin, and melatonin—that affect behavior

Five Groups of Natural Ingredients Targeting the Central Nervous System

Cognition & Memory:
Improve acetylcholine function

* Huperzine A
* a-Tocotrienol complex
* 5-Methyl tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF)

Nervousness:
Improve GABA & glutamate function

* Taurine
* N-Acetylcysteine
* Green tea extract (catechins and EGCG)
* Magnesium and vitamin B6

Focus & Attention:
Improve dopamine & catecholamine function

* Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
* Casein tryptic hydrosylate
* L-Theanine

Depression:
Improve cortisol & serotonin function

* Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
* Vitamin D
* Methylcobalamin
* 5-Methyl tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF)

Insomnia:
Improve melatonin & sleep hygiene function

* Melatonin
* Casein tryptic hydrosylate
* Passion flower extract

A Natural Approach to Support Memory & Cognition

New Product From Metagenic’s

Discover the Neuroprotective Benefits of Huperzine A

According to the National Institutes of Health, an estimated one in four U.S. adults suffer from mental health disorders in a given year. For millions of people, this translates to complaints relating to
memory, forgetfulness, and dementia. Although these conditions are often seen as a natural consequence of the aging process, losing the ability to think, remember, and learn are NOT inevitable.

In fact, there are many effective strategies for maintaining optimal mental function, including the targeting of neurotransmitters—the endogenously produced chemicals that act as messengers between
cells in the brain. And for cognitive processing, memory, arousal, and attention—scientists have identified the neurotransmitter acetylcholine as playing a critical role. Consequently, gradual loss of
mental clarity is associated with diminishing acetylcholine synthesis and rapid degradation by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE).

Targeting Neurotransmitter Balance

As mentioned above, the primary goal of many conventional treatments for neurological health is neurotransmitter modulation. For example, current drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) exert their effects by blocking AChE and increasing synaptic acetylcholine levels. However, many doctors prefer natural and clinically successful neurological health products that are uniquely designed to act centrally—within the brain—through the careful
selection of ingredients.

The Rise of Huperzine A

One natural ingredient that has a long track record of clinical efficacy and safety in protecting the brain and improving memory/learning through acetylcholine support is purified huperzine A—an alkaloid from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata). In the early 1980s, a team of Chinese scientists identified a new application for Chinese club moss that was linked to this specific molecule. Today, abundant research suggests that huperzine A exerts a slow reversible
inhibition of AChE and preserves acetylcholine, resulting in the alleviation of many of the symptoms and progression of AD.* In one clinical trial, patients with Alzheimer’s disease treated with huperzine A had significant improvement in memory, cognitive, and
behavioral function scales compared to placebo after 8 weeks of treatment.*

Because of its history of success, huperzine A is currently in phase III human clinical trials in China and phase II clinical trials in the United States for the treatment of patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

The Mayo Clinic and National Institute of Mental Health are the primary participants in this U.S.-based investigation.

Another benefit of huperzine A is that it can used to support mental clarity and cognitive function in the absence of dementia or AD. Although a person with a family history of early onset senile dementia and AD may want to consider including huperzine A in their basic supplement program for brain protection—an individual who is over 40 years old and not feeling as “mentally sharp” as they used to, and those experiencing increasing forgetfulness, minor memory
lapses, and difficulty following directions may also benefit from small amounts of huperzine A as a “brain tonic.” (Menopausal women also may find huperzine A helpful).

What’s the difference between “purified huperzine A” and a standardized extract of Huperzia serrata supplying measurable levels of huperzine A?

Proof of safety and efficacy are the critical differences between purified huperzine A and the standardized extract of Huperzia serrata. There are over 300 published articles identifying the structure, function, and bioavailability, mechanism of actions,
safety, and dose response of the purified molecule called HupA with regards to neurological effects and its influence in memory, dementia, and AD. Only the purified huperzine A is the subject of current human clinical trials for AD. The operative word is “purified.”
There is no such body of useful information, based on traditional application or current science, regarding the use of a standardized extract which contains other undisclosed substances and huperzine
alkaloids, one of which is huperzine A.

All Nutritional Products Are NOT Created Equal

Sure—they may look the same or even taste the same, and the labels are likely to contain similar (if not identical) lists of key ingredients.

Does this mean that they are all the same? Certainly not! In fact, numerous manufacturers state that their products meet or exceed all GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standards, but do they really?

It appears that the only objective way to determine the credibility of a manufacturer’s GMP status is to see its certification.

Why go through all that trouble? Because end-products from questionable, non-GMP-certified manufacturing processes may lead to less safe and less effective supplements for you.

Therefore, be sure to distinguish the products made by GMP-certified manufacturers, such as Metagenics, Inc., from the rest!

5 Markers of Quality in a Nutritional Supplement Company

Keep in mind that GMP deals with designing, building, and implementing advanced controls into the system to reduce the chance of:

* Product contamination
* Mix-ups
* Errors

Would you place your trust in any product—especially a nutritional supplement—that is made without these controls? Probably not. Listed below are the 5 markers of quality to look for in
manufacturers of nutraceuticals:

* GMP-Certified Manufacturing Facilities
* Comprehensive Scientific Evaluation of Ingredients.
* Comprehensive Safety Reviews.
* Human Clinical Evaluations.
* Scientific Staff and Facilities.

Blood Sugar: A Balancing Act
Questioning “Normal” Levels & Weighing Other Factors
Research has shown that poor insulin and glucose function may play a significant role in the onset of more serious health concerns, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD).
In addition to the 20.6 million American adults with type 2 diabetes, estimates from 2002 suggest that 54 million adults also have impaired fasting glucose (IFG).* For clinical purposes, either IFG or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is now considered “pre-
diabetes.”
Studies have shown that many with pre-diabetes develop type 2 diabetes within 10 years, and are at a 50% greater risk of developing CVD.* A timely diagnosis is critical, because progression to diabetes from pre-diabetes is not inevitable.*
New Criteria & Associated Risk Factors
In 2003, experts recommended that the criterion for recognizing IFG be lowered from 110 mg/dL to 100 mg/dL.* Using this criterion could mean that an additional 20%—or almost 11 million more U.S. adults—have pre-diabetes. (The same IFG criterion
reduction was also made in 2005 for recognizing metabolic syndrome.*)
But according to a recent study, even blood sugar levels in the higher yet “normal” range of 87 mg/dL to 99 mg/dL may also predict diabetes risk—along with body mass index (BMI), physical activity level, smoking status, and serum triglyceride levels.* Another study suggests that an increase in BMI of 1 kg/m2 (even in the non-obese level) may raise the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 25%.*
Changing Lifestyles, Changing Lives
Experts now recognize that lifestyle changes—such as dietary changes, body composition improvement, and modest exercise—can delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes by up to 58%.* In addition to a delay in onset, studies have shown that people with
pre-diabetes who improve their BMI and increase their physical activity can even return their blood glucose levels to a normal range.*

Let’s Have a Heart-to-Heart Discussion

The Global Burden of Risk from Cardiovascular Disease
(CVD)

According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, close to 17 million people around the world die of CVD each year. In fact, by 2020 heart disease and stroke will become the leading cause of both death and disability worldwide, with the number of fatalities projected to reach over 20 million a year and to more than 24 million a year by 2030. More than ever, we need to continually educate ourselves on how to incorporate “heart smart” choices into our
daily activities in order to help maintain cardiovascular health for years to come. To address CVD-related concerns head-on, Metagenic’s offers powerful nutritional support for cardiovascular
function, which includes UltraMeal Plus® Medical Food Program.

The UltraMeal Plus Program Targets Conditions Associated with Metabolic Syndrome & CVD

The UltraMeal Plus program is a clinically tested medical food strategy that incorporates diet, exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices. This
comprehensive program is designed to support the management of conditions associated with metabolic syndrome and CVD markers, such as:

* Hypercholesterolemia
* Hypertension
* Hypertriglyceridemia

Advantages of the UltraMeal Plus Program:

* Satisfying high-protein/low-glycemic-index meal option—only 160 calories per serving
* 15 grams of soy protein per serving from PharmaSoy®—diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce heart disease risk, and soy protein has also been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects
* 2 grams of plant sterols per serving—the National Institutes of Health recommends consumption of 2 grams of plant sterols a day to promote healthy cholesterol levels, and a daily total intake of at least 1.3 grams of plant sterol esters as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease

How Does the UltraMeal® Plus Program Stack Up Against the AHA Diet?
Study in Nutrition Shows: Medical Food Program More Effective in Modifying Cardiovascular Disease MarkersCardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in women, with postmenopausal women at greatest risk. While elevated cholesterol and triglycerides are well-known risk factors for CVD, research suggests that insulin resistance and related conditions, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, are also key factors in CVD in postmenopausal women. The good news is that the treatment for these risk factors is frequently lifestyle (diet and exercise) oriented. Of course, not all lifestyle programs are created equal.Comparing Two Leading Dietary/Lifestyle Plans…Many conventional dietary programs such as a standard American Heart Association dietary plan (AHAD) are low-fat, high carbohydrate diets designed to lower elevated cholesterol levels. However, individuals on these diets may eat high glycemic foods that can cause spikes in blood sugar—increasing hunger, decreasing satiety (feeling of fullness), and fostering insulin resistance and a variety of related health problems. Most importantly, these diets may not produce the desired results.In contrast, the UltraMeal Plus medical food program incorporates a low-glycemic-index diet to help balance blood sugar, a flexible exercise program, and the nutritional support of UltraMeal Plus medical food, a specially formulated powdered beverage containing a blend of soy protein and plant sterols—acknowledged as natural agents that reduce the risk of CVD by the National Institutes of Health as well as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which has established food claims for
both nutrients.
To compare these two leading dietary/lifestyle plans, the February issue of the peer-reviewed journal Nutrition (Vol. 22(2), pp. 104-113) featured the results of a 2-arm prospective clinical trial in postmenopausal women at risk for CVD. This clinical trial showed a greater improvement in established cardiovascular health markers when comparing the UltraMeal Plus medical food program to a standard AHAD and exercise; keep reading for more study details.The Results Are Clear: UltraMeal Plus Medical Food Program is Preferred

This 12-week study (53 subjects completing the trial) showed that the UltraMeal Plus medical food program was significantly more effective than the AHAD protocol in not only improving levels of “good” HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and lowering triglycerides and “bad” LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), but also in promoting weight loss, lowering blood pressure, and improving markers of CVD and insulin resistance. See table 1 for additional study highlights.

The Advantages of a Natural Approach to Minor Pain

When we experience minor pain and discomfort, we are feeling the outcome of a complex biochemical cascade. For example, an afternoon of working in the garden can leave your shoulders and back feeling sore and stiff. This occurs because tissues in your body may have literally broken down.

In order to repair these tissues, immune cells in the affected area release signaling agents called cytokines that prompt cells to produce the cyclooxygenase (COX) class of enzymes. These enzymes convert fats that make up the outer layer of cells into substances that can cause minor pain. A commonly produced substance that is associated with minor pain is called prostaglandin E2 (PGE2).

Although PGE2 production has utility within the body, increased or continual production can inhibit the body’s ability to heal properly. By calming this biochemical cascade, we can support tissue health and reduce minor pain and discomfort.

The Problem with Conventional Approaches

Conventional approaches to managing minor pain almost invariably involve the use of chemicals that block the activity of COX enzymes. The downside to this approach is that many cells require a certain level of COX production in order to maintain health and proper function. COX activity that is required by the cell can be referred to as constitutive, whereas COX production that occurs during minor pain can be referred to as inducible because the signaling agents produced by cells after stress and strain “induce” the cell to produce COX enzymes.

The unwanted side effects that have been associated with conventional approaches to minor pain relief - such as stomach ulcers, kidney damage, and cardiac events - are due to their blocking of both inducible and constitutive COX enzyme production.

The goal of a healthy, natural approach to minor pain relief is to reduce the production of inducible COX activity, without affecting constitutive COX production. A natural strategy should attempt to support the production of substances in the body that protect tissue integrity and relieve minior pain.

This goal can be achieved by:

* Supplementing with select nutritional factors - such as certain hops extracts - that have a demonstrated ability to inhibit the production of COX by influencing signaling agents that normally prompt cells to increase COX production, rather than by blocking COX activity. (See Kaprex)

* Consuming adequate levels of omega-3 essential fatty acids. These healthy dietary oils have a profound ability to calm the cascade that leads to minor pain by displacing fats that are transformed into the pain causing substance PGE2, while simultaneously promoting the formation of substances that relieve minor pain. (See Omega-3’s)

* Consuming herbs that have been shown to subtly reduce the activity of COX enzymes, as well as to help regulate the production of lipoxygenase (LOX) enzymes. These herbs include ginger, boswellia, curcumin, and quercetin among others. When considering herbs, it’s important to choose a blend that has a high level of predicted safety and effectiveness.* Supplementing with select nutritional factors that have been shown to interrupt a cascade of biochemical events that can negatively impact tissue integrity and contribute to joint stiffness and minor pain. These factors include niacinamide and N- acetylcysteine (NAC). When taken together, they have complementary effects to improve outcomes.* Improving the diet by eliminating foods that can irritate minor pain, as well as by consuming foods that can help reduce minor pain. One element of dietary modification is avoiding foods that are known to cause allergic reactions.

There are numerous other strategies that can help to relieve minor pain and discomfort. In certain situations, a Medical Food (see UltraInflamX) solution may be indicated.

Medical Foods allow for the delivery of a special combination of macronutrients - such as protein and select fats - as well as micronutrients, herbs, and phytonutrients. Delivering macronutrients in combinations with other nutritional factors can provide support for conditions associated with inflammation, as well as a convenient and easy way to modify one’s diet.

The most effective natural approaches to minor pain relief will likely employ a combination of nutritional factors that are based on the specific needs of each individual. Remember, the goal of natural support for the relief of minor pain is to address the health of the individual, not simply to block the action of an enzyme produced in the body.
