Should You Be Taking BCAA’s?
BCAA is a shortened word form for Branch Chain Amino Acids. These are incredibly important for your body and are referred to as “essential amino acids”. BCAA incorporates three amino acids of Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine that the body cannot produce on its own. The only way to get these three amino acids in your body is if you consume it through a protein rich diet, or by taking a BCAA supplement.
Current Diet and BCAA
Whether you are a good candidate or not for taking BCAA’s depends on your current diet of foods, how active you are, your current health, and what goals you have for your physical development. Having BCAA in ultra high levels in your body can actually be negative for your health if your not careful. This is why if you are not physically active and do not suffer from muscle atrophy, it is recommended that you do not take a BCAA supplement if you already consume large amounts of dairy or meat in your diet.
However, even if you do have a diet that is high in protein, you could still benefit from taking a BCAA if you are physically active and looking for better muscle development. BCAA supplements help the body with muscle protein synthesis which is a process of turning fats and nutrients into building stronger muscle fibers. So if you are looking for bigger and stronger muscles, then a BCAA supplement would be very helpful for you.
BCAA Strenghtens Muscles
Also, if you notice a weakening or shrinking of your muscles, then a BCAA supplement is something you should consider taking. Muscle atrophy starts becoming very prevalent in individuals over the age of 40. This happens for several reasons, but primarily because your body cannot produce as many muscle-building hormones (like anabolic hormones and testosterone). However, BCAA supplements can help regulate and increase production of these hormones in your body to help reverse the effects of muscle atrophy in your body.
BCAA Can Help You Lose Weight
Fat loss can also be helped with a BCAA supplement. If you are looking to cut a few inches around the waist and want a more lean physique, then you may want to take a BCAA supplement. As stated earlier, BCAA helps with muscle protein synthesis. And whenever you workout and take a BCAA supplement, what it can do is help take the extra fat around your muscles and burn it into energy to be used by the muscles. So if you workout and are looking to have a lower percent of body fat, you should take a BCAA supplement
Exceptions To Taking a BCAA Supplement
There are some exceptions to those people who should not take a BCAA supplement though. It has been found through research that those who have ALS or epileptic seizures should not take BCAA supplements. For different reasons, BCAA has been found to not work well with hormones in the body when these conditions are present. As such, if you suffer from any type of nerve or mental damage, you should not take a BCAA supplement unless cleared by a doctor.
For the most part, however, if you are a healthy individual who is looking for better gains in the gym or your respective area of physical competition, then it is recommended that you take a BCAA supplement. Yet, if you have one of the conditions listed, or are pregnant or nursing, then you should avoid consuming a BCAA supplement as the affects that it has on the body or child may have negative health consequences.
